The development of the 36 big towns - a priority for the next programming period

"Urban development will be the main priority in regional development over the next programming period, focusing on the 36 big cities in the country," said Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Liliyana Pavlova. She attended the Liberalisation of Regional Markets forum, organised by the Vienna Economic Forum and the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The event under the patronage of PM Boyko Borissov was officially opened by Dr. Erhard Busek, President of the Vienna Economic Forum. The programme for rural areas where there will be bigger resources for developing municipal infrastructure, will include similar measures for the remaining municipalities. The financing of projects for the prevention of natural disasters will remain within the future Regional Development and Rural Development programmes. Energy efficiency in public and private buildings will also be a priority.

Pavlova voiced her hopes that the resource of the future operational programme will be at least equal to the current resource of Regional Development, despite the reduced number of municipalities. "It will be good if we can agree at least 80% co-financing under it," said Minister Pavlova. According to her, the construction of the water and sewage network and of treatment plants for drinking water should be a priority as well. Concurrently, treatment plants for waste waters will be built. The Minister reminded that investments of some BGN 40 bn in the water sector are needed.
