Kuneva proposes the CEC to be appointed by the President

Former EU Commissioner and founder of the Bulgaria for Citizens movement, Meglena Kuneva, demanded a professional and non-partisan Central Election Commission (CEC) to be appointed by the President. During a press conference held at BTA today, Kuneva expressed hope that Rosen Plevneliev would take into consideration her ideas for amendments to the electoral legislation, including the deleting of the so-called “dead souls” from the voter lists.

According to her assessment and that of international organisations, the greatest number of forgeries was registered during the latest elections. Kuneva pointed out that Bulgaria bore no comparison with any other country in the world in terms of the scale of the buying of votes. “This is our common problem and the responsibility for conducting transparent and fair elections is the Cabinet’s,” said the former EU Commissioner. She appealed for civil pressure on the Government in order to convince it that citizens want fair elections.

Kuneva’s movement, which will soon be transformed into a party, is definitely for the introduction of e-voting which will make Bulgaria a modern country and ensure wider participation of citizens in the electoral process. If e-voting is introduced, “many young people will take part in the elections and it will be more convenient for disabled people”, believes the Bulgaria for Citizens movement. The last census of the population was indicative of this when 40% of Bulgarians preferred to register online.
