President Plevneliev nominates Irina Bokova for a second term

President Rosen Plevneliev has officially nominated Irina Bokova for a second term as Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation - UNESCO, BNR reported. The Bulgarian President is on a working visit to the US where he attended the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.

In September 2009, the Bulgarian diplomat Irina Bokova was officially elected Director General of UNESCO. A procedure for selecting a new Director General of the organisation will start in 2013.

President Rosen President took part in the official opening of the plenary session of Bill Clinton’ Global Initiative. The Bulgarian Head of State attended the opening of the new school year of Bulgarian schools in New York and celebrated the Independence Day of Bulgaria with the local Bulgarian community.

In New York, President Plevneliev held a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who praised Bulgaria’s role in finding a peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria. At the UN headquarters, Plevneliev will also meet representatives of Jewish organisations and will hold talks with the President of Kosovo Atifete Jahjaga.

The Bulgarian Head of State will also attend the reception hosted by US President Barack Obama in honour of the leaders participating in the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.
