The youth organisation of NMSP nominates Meglena Kuneva for the Presidential post

“The youth organisation of NMSP (National Movement for Stability and Prosperity) in Sofia nominated Meglena Kuneva for the Presidential post,” announced yesterday party leaders. The statement was released on the day when the Government of NMSP signed the treaty for the country's accession to the European Union - April 25. A press release of the young people from NMSP stated that Bulgaria had joined the EU through the efforts of many people but the role of the chief negotiator - Meglena Kuneva had been crucial. She served as Minister for European Affairs of Bulgaria after the accession. "Mrs Kuneva continued to play a major role in the European development of Bulgaria as EU Commissioner for consumer rights,” stated further the activists from the yellow party. They added that 700 million Europeans had chosen her as "Commissioner of the Year" and as "European of the Year” - a high acknowledgement for Bulgaria. Representatives of the youth organisation of NMSP commented that they wanted to be headed by an intelligent, educated, successful, proven, reputable, honest and good person – and, first of all, by a thinking person rather than by an ambitious politician.

UDF (Union of Democratic Forces) leaders stated that they will select their candidate for the Presidential post at the National Executive Council (NEC) today. So far, the blue party has put forward three candidates for the post: MEP Nadezhda Neynski, MP Vanyo Sharkov and Vice-Chairman of UDF in the North Central Region, Rumen Hristov.

According to NEC members, however, this time the nominations did not come from ordinary party members to the party leaders but the opposite was the case and this could cause some tension in the UDF.

Last week, an announcement was made that the negotiating teams of the UDF and DSB (Democrats for Strong Bulgaria) had not yet reached an agreement on the common nominations for the mayoral and presidential elections. The UDF City Council gave their negotiating team a deadline until April 29 to reach this agreement and suggested that, if they are not able to find a consensus candidate, preliminary elections for the common nominations of the Blue coalition should be held on May 15.
