No rise in electricity prices in 2013, Semerdjiev promises

Electricity prices for the population will not increase as of July next year, Chairman of the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (SEWRC) Angel Semerdjiev said at a special briefing at the Ministry of Economy and Energy. This statement comes only a day after Semerdzhiev said that probably, by July 2013, the price of electricity will rise by 3-4% because of the "green energy charge". But Energy Minister Delian Dobrev, who was the initiator of the briefing, noted this was "just a hypothesis," in case the so-called "access fee" to the grid for producers of electricity from sun and wind is not introduced in September. It is right that those who make the expenditures, i.e. the producers of electricity from RES, pay them, not the end users, i.e. the population, Dobrev said. According to the Minister, there is no reason to increase the price of electricity. Furthermore, due to the investments made by the state company Maritza East 2 for increasing its energy efficiency, the cost of electricity it produces will decrease, resulting in a decrease of the final wholesale price.

In turn, SEWRC's Chairman said that the country fulfils its commitments for the production of electricity from renewable energy sources (RES). But only the development of photovoltaic systems, the energy from which is the most expensive, is ahead of schedule. It is, therefore, necessary to stimulate only the most effective equipment and not all through preferential purchase prices.
