A total of BGN 50 mln earmarked for winter cleaning

“A total of BGN 50 mln has been earmarked for winter cleaning of roads,” said engineer Lazar Lazarov, head of the National Road Infrastructure Agency. “The amount is the same as last year. If more money is needed, it will be at the expense of current repairs. Winter road maintenance is actually paid by next year’s budget – the budget for 2013 - it has always been so. Therefore, the money for winter maintenance has been ensured. If some money is economised, it will go for patching of roads after the winter season. However, if the winter is worse than last year, we are ready to extend additional money,” added Lazarov. A total of 28 companies will be cleaning the 27 districts and the motorways in the country.

“The most important lesson from last year is that regarding communications and the organisation of road maintenance. Therefore, the preparations and the inspection of companies began as early as September. Some 50-60% of the problems were due to the lack of communication,” specified Lazarov. He also appealed to all drivers and owners of motor vehicles to equip their cars with winter tyres.
