Vezhdi Rashidov: I have secured a total of BGN 20 mln for the construction of the Bulgarian Louvre

Minister of Culture Vezhdi Rashidov secured an option to allocate BGN 20 mln from European funds for the construction of the Bulgarian Louvre. The minister announced the news in person for the Bulgarian National Television yesterday. He said that, currently, an additional amount of BGN 10 mln was being sought for the museum and that the whole project was expected to be launched in September. Rashidov said that the country had a large number of exponents and objects of cultural value and that it was high time to display these. "This is a wonderful area, in the centre of Sofia, where we will exhibit the art currently stored in basements," he added.

The issue about the Bulgarian Louvre was raised two years ago. This is an area of 23,000 sq m, where modern exhibition facilities will be built and treasures of the Bulgarian culture displayed.

On Tuesday, Rashidov met with Henri Loyrette, Director General of the Louvre Museum. After the meeting, he said that Bulgaria could be invited to participate in the general exhibition of Byzantine heritage in Louvre. The Minister expressed his great satisfaction with the meeting and announced that he would be the happiest man if Bulgaria is not shown in the outskirts of Paris alone. He added that talks were being held with the Director of the Louvre Museum and French Minister of Culture Frederic Mitterrand for this to happen and for Bulgarian artists to be able to show their art to true connoisseurs in the heart of Paris.

During the meeting, Rashidov briefed Mr Loyrette on the efforts of the Ministry of Culture to introduce Bulgarian talents abroad. The Director General did declare that he was highly impressed by the county’s rich cultural heritage and added that the French and people all over the world must come to know Bulgaria through its culture
