Made in Bulgaria Union: The total ban on smoking is ill-timed

Regarding the protest of the owners of restaurants, cafes and other establishments in Bulgaria, united in professional organisations and informal associations against the ban on smoking in catering and entertainment establishments, the general meeting of the Made in Bulgaria Union held on December 6 approved a resolution in support of the initiative for repealing the total ban on smoking in restaurants, cafes, etc., reading:

“The adopted total ban on smoking is ill-timed. The members of the Union are concerned about the state of the sector including restaurants, cafes, bars, etc. The survival of hundreds of companies in the sector is at risk and thousands of people have already lost their jobs. Bankruptcies are also a fact already. This is not to a matter of defending or supporting smoking, but a matter of conducting a reasonable policy that could prepare the Bulgarian public and businesses and which will lead to the desired result. In the US, which is a leading country in the fight against smoking, this has been going on for more than 25 years and we want to achieve the same result within a year or two.

The Made in Bulgaria Union supports the request of branch organisations that, within the framework of the existing legislation, these establishments should be given special status, allowing a possibility to set aside parts of the establishments for smokers, in strict compliance with the requirements for air conditioning, ventilation and not allowing minors in them.
