Producer prices in the agricultural sector increase by more than 20% in a year

Producer prices in the agricultural sector increased by 20.4% in the fourth quarter of 2012, compared to the same quarter of 2011, data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI) showed. The price surge was mainly triggered by the plant-growing sector, which marked a 24.5% increase, while stock-breeding marked a 1.7% increase.

The most significant increases were seen in prices of soft wheat - 39.9%, maize - 31.5%, barley - 31.2%, sunflower - 36.2%, potatoes - 20.9%, and hen eggs - 23 %. Prices of seeds and seedlings, mineral fertilisers and animal health products were also higher - 3.2%, 8% and 8.5%, respectively, while forages' prices marked a 26.2% increase.

Prices of goods and services for current consumption in agriculture were 7.7% higher in the fourth quarter of 2012, compared to the same quarter of 2011.

NSI recently announced that, on an annual basis, the country's inflation in January was 4.4% and the increase was triggered mainly by the 4.6% surge in food prices. It is noteworthy that the increase in prices in the agricultural sector was not due to growing demand and turnover but a result mainly of the rise in international oil prices, wheat and feed.
