Bulgarian Academy of Sciences accepts the idea of a Board of Trustees that will strengthen relations with the business sector

Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) needs to establish even closer relations with the government, the business sector and universities. The setting up of a Board of Trustees would assist the development of these relations and the better funding of the Academy. It will enable the entrepreneurs and the society to understand better the BAS needs, stated yesterday before Klassa BAS Chairman Nikola Sabotinov. The idea of establishment of a Board of Trustees, connected with the business sector and the GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) government, was delivered by the Prime Minister Boyko Borissov at his meeting with BAS representatives at the National Assembly on February 1, this year. Currently, a working group of parliamentarians, representatives of the executive power, BAS scientists, including Academician Ivan Juchnovski are drawing up the new amendments to the Law on BAS which should be completed in early March.

According to the BAS Chairman, despite the Board of Trustees, the Bulgarian science needs to retain its autonomy. According to former BAS chairman Acad. Juchnovski, the Board of Trustees should be held accountable to the National Assembly. The current BAS Chairman was explicit that for now the threat of dividing the Institute had passed. "With the PM's assurances, the integrity of the Academy is preserved. It is a national research center and the leading scientific organization in our country," explained Sabotinov.
