Three officials of Highways SPJSC laid off as a result of snow-blocked roads

Interior Minister Tsvetanov: Trucks drivers are to blame


Three officials were laid off because of the crisis situation with the snow-blocked roads in the country at the weekend.
Yesterday, Anton Antonov, Valentin Nikolov and Ivan Iliev from the Board of Directors of the state enterprise Highways SPJSC were dismissed from their posts by order of the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Liliana Pavlova.

This was reported by Pavlova after an extraordinary meeting convened by the Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, which was attended by representatives of all institutions responsible for snow removal.

Several hours later, the Ministry of Regional Development reported that the management of Highways SPJSC had already been changed. The Board of Directors is now chaired by Emil Milanov, while Dafina Stancheva was elected as CEO and member of the Board of Directors; Alexandar Filev is now a BOD Council member. Besides the replacement of managers, Liliana Pavlova amended the Statutes of Highways SPJSC, as result, the responsibility for the company's activities will no longer be collective but borne by the Executive Director alone.

Interior Minister Tsvetanov, in turn, pointed out the "indisciplined actions of drivers" is one of the main obstacles to dealing with the crisis situation. He added that 80 trucks had been stuck on the Struma motorway because of police orders imposed on the first two trucks that had not been complied with. Because of the outstanding police order, the drivers can be fined BGN 300 and their driver's licence might be revoked for 6 months, reported the Traffic Police.

Over a 24-hour period, a total of 22,000 complaints were received by the operators of the emergency phone number 112 and 3,258 of these concerned incidents. The alerts have been referred to the relevant services, announced the Interior Ministry. Following the emergency meeting of the Interior Ministry, it became clear that Sofia Airport has provided snow removal  machines for the cleaning of Hemus highway.
