BDZ’s daily losses from a strike estimated at over BGN 500,000

“The Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) will lose some BGN 500,000-600,000 every 24 hours from stopping the trains,” Petar Bunev, Chairman of the railway syndicate, said yesterday on BNR (Bulgarian National Radio). The trade unions expect PM Boyko Borissov to intervene in the negotiations for preventing the strike in BDZ, scheduled to begin on March 10 by stopping the trains for an hour as a warning. This was announced on BNR by Bunev and CITUB (Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria) leader Plamen Dimitrov.

“We expect in the next few days assurances from the Prime Minister and Transport Minister Aleksandar Tsvetkov for the implementation of the investment programme in railways,” said Plamen Dimitrov. However, an effective strike will follow if no agreement is reached. As of March 11, trains will stop every day between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

According to Bunev, BDZ fails to finance its operation because of the crisis which has drastically reduced freight turnover. Bunev reiterated that the World Bank loan of BGN 460 mln will be solely spent on covering the company’s outstanding debts. The syndicate demands that the projected 30% lay-offs be deferred until the year 2020 and not be effected by 2014 as required by the World Bank.
