CITUB demands a minimum salary of BGN 290

Ana Mihova

The minimum wage of BGN 240 must be increased to BGN 290. This proposal will be submitted today by the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of Bulgaria (CITUB) at the session of the National Council for Tripartite Cooperation. However, according to Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Totyu Mladenov, whose idea is not supported by Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, the minimum wage should be increased to BGN 270 as of July 1.

"In 19 out of 20 EU member-states which have set a minimum wage, over the last three years, there has been an increase," stated, Plamen Dimitrov. He will also insist on this proposal to be discussed at the Tripartite Council, despite the fact that it is not on the agenda. The Syndicate proposed seven ideas in support of household incomes, as well as another two measures aimed at controlling the prices of essential goods and services.

Under another proposal, children allowances should be increased from BGN 35 to BGN 45. CITUB also insists on launching "intensive negotiations" with employers in determining the benchmark index for wage growth in the real sector in 2011.

They also proposed that the minimum retirement pension for length of service and old age be raised from BGN 136 to BGN 150, while social pensions should be increased from BGN 100 to BGN 105.
As sources of revenue, CITUB pointed out the collection of social security contributions due which amount to over BGN 1 bn, raising the maximum insurable income to BGN 2,400, as well as an acceleration of the adopted measures for the sale of greenhouse gas emissions and the collection of advance payments on the leasing of state land.
