EU united on the stress tests of Nuclear Power Plants and invite neighbor countries to join the initiative

“The stress tests for European Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) are likely to start next year and until the end of this year the criteria will be clear,” said Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism, Traicho Traikov yesterday, after an extraordinary meeting of the Energy Council in Brussels. The meeting was triggered by the catastrophic events in Japan on March 11, where after the earthquake and the caused by it tsunamis the NPP Fukushima 1 was severely damaged and ceased operations. The plant was nearly destroyed and its reactors are emitting radioactive gases, a process still active until now.

Austria suggested the stress test idea first, while France agreed yesterday to submit to tests all the 58 NPPs on its territory. There are a total of 143 NPPs in the EU countries.

“We expect the tests to be compulsory for all countries and their results to be fully transparent,” said Traikov , cited by BTA. According to him, the tests of steadfastness are in favor of Bulgaria, since the reactors in Kozloduy meet the highest standards.

“The EU will invite its neighbour countries to partake in the stress testing of Nuclear Power Plants,” said EU Commissionaire Günther Oettinger. He explained that the experts from the European Commission would prepare in the coming weeks a list of the parameters which would be checked in the plants.
