Areva Group to improve the safety of our nuclear power plants

The French Areva Group is interested in assisting our country to achieve the highest safety standards of nuclear energy. The Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) yesterday, which will deepen the cooperation between the two companies in the fields of nuclear energy and renewable energy sources.

"The memorandum concerns nuclear projects or parts of these on two nuclear sites in Bulgaria – at the towns of Belene and Kozloduy," said Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Traicho Traikov yesterday. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov attended the signing of the document as well.

"At the next stage, BEH and Areva will discuss the possibility to increase the capacity of the two blocks of the future Belene NPP," told Klassa Yordan Georgiev, Executive Director of BEH. The French company, together with the German Siemens, are subcontractors of the Russian Atomstroyexport in the construction of the Belene NPP.

"The document also provides for an exchange of experience, aimed at raising the standards of nuclear safety in our facilities after the events in the Japanese Fukushima NPP," said Traikov. We hope that the document will contribute to the improvement of the reactors at Belene NPP in order to for them become units of a new generation.

"Areva Group is a leader in terms of high safety standards in the field of the nuclear energetic. We will suggest options for modernization of the plant to the Bulgarian Government, and it will decide how to proceed further," said President of Areva Anne Loverzhon.
