Fish prices to increase

Fish prices may increase at the beginning of the summer, say dealers at the Bulgarian seaside. “Imported fish is already BGN 1/kg more expensive than last year on the wholesale markets in the Burgas region, commented one of the top importers and exporters of fish in region, Stoyan Traychevski, quoted by BTA. The hike is due to increased prices in the countries from which the fish is imported. “Sea bream, sea wolf, salmon, grey mullet, mackerel and scad are already more expensive. These species are imported mainly from Norway, Spain and Greece,” said Traychevski. The price of farmed trout also rose by some BGN 0.40-0.50/kg. Black Sea fish prices – of scad, blue-fish, belted bonito and turbot may rise slightly this year.

According to Traychevski the reasons for the price hike of fish are complex. On the one hand, the fish population is decreasing in global oceans and on the other - the prices of energy and fuels used constantly by ships are jumping. The observations on the market show that people prefer to buy less expensive fish. The most popular fish in Bulgaria remains the mackerel. There is limited market for salmon, baramundi, sea wolf and sea bream. In fact, pending the entry into force of the spring fishing ban, less than a month remains and until then the fishing is practically allowed everywhere, commented Yancho Yanev, Director of the Executive Directorate Fisheries and Aquaculture, Burgas.
