Disagreement in the European Parliament blocks a common decision on nuclear safety

"Yesterday, the European Parliament rejected the draft of a common resolution on nuclear safety in the community," announced officials from the Secretariat in Strasbourg. There were 264 votes "for", 300 - "against" and 61 abstentions. "The resolution was not adopted because the MEPs disagreed on a number of texts in the document which led to its rejection," explained MEP Vladimir Urutchev from GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) to Klassa.

He said that such a document could be approved only after proper measures in the Japanese Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and the release of official information about the actions taken there for restriction of the radiation disaster. "At present, it is difficult to assess whether a new resolution on nuclear safety in Europe will be drafted soon," said Urutchev. "A serious review of the nuclear policy is underway in Europe and, hopefully, it will refer only to reactors' safety," he added.

"The MEPs from the Green party demanded that the life extension of old blocks should be banned. Such a decision will be disastrous for Bulgaria, because now we are launching procedures for the life extension of the V and VI blocks at the Kozloduy NPP," said the MEP.

"Furthermore, the European Parliament rejected the resolution and the proposal for a moratorium on the construction of new nuclear power facilities within the community. If it had been adopted, the resolution would surely have blocked the Belene NPP project which is not in the interest of our country," highlighted Urutchev.

"The rejection of the document by the European Parliament is in favour of Bulgaria," said yesterday MEP Iliana Yotova, cited by the Focus news agency. According to her, the texts included in the draft directly affect the Belene NPP project. "In another paragraph, it was written that the share of the plants, using Renewable Energy Sources, must reach 22% until 2020 and 95% until 2050. We believe that this can not happen," added Yotova.
