Hristina Mitreva resigns as NSSI Head

Hristina Mitreva submitted her resignation as NSSI (National Social Security Institute) Head to the parliamentary group of GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria), announced yesterday the Deputy Chairman of the parliamentary group (PG) of GERB, Valentin Nikolov. He specified that Mitreva stated that she had always acted professionally. Besides, she is willing to explain to the press her actions. Nikolov said that GERB MPs thanked her for her performance. "We think that a new innovative public figure having fresh ideas will boost the social security sector," said also Nikolov.

The scandal with Hristina Mitreva broke on May 13 when the Prime Minister, Boyko Borissov requested her resignation on the grounds that she had reached the retirement age. Besides, she was accused of misleading the Cabinet by having projected wrongly estimated revenues in the NSSI budget. On her part, Mitreva replied that she did not intend to resign and that the Labour Code allowed her to work full-time even after having reached the statutory retirement age. The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of Bulgaria (CITUB known as KNSB) declared itself in her defence. The CITUB representatives sent a protest declaration to "distance themselves from the improper way in which claims were laid to the NSSI and its management." The CITUB stance stated that "the Government Ethics Rules require that all claims and dissatisfaction with the actions of state employees or heads of public institutions should be addressed openly to them in seeking the relevant explanations, while the government's decisions should be personally announced to them. A similar position was expressed by the Confederation of Labour (CT) 'Podkrepa'.

BSP (Bulgarian Socialist Party) stated yesterday that it supported the NSSI Governor, Hristina Mitreva, but reckoned that the GERB Cabinet was shunning political responsibility with her dismissal. "Generally, the NSSI draft budget is submitted by the government after consulting experts from the Ministry of Finance and the Council of Ministers and it is a part of the general state budget. The fact that the final revenues were down by BGN 200 mln is a direct consequence of the collapse of the Bulgarian economy. This does not mean that we support NSSI's Head because she really committed numerous outrages," clarified BSP leader, Sergei Stanishev.
