Green light given to Strategic Infrastructure Projects company

The Council of Ministers has approved the establishment of a national company - Strategic Infrastructure Projects. The new structure was initiated by the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works headed by Rosen Plevneliev. The company will deal with the construction of the Hemus, Cherno More and Struma motorways. Strategic Infrastructure Projects will be the beneficiary of European funds during the next programming period. The establishment of the company will be legally stipulated by passing amendments to the Roads Act. The project for the new company was agreed with the European Commission in March.

The establishment of the company is also a pilot project for drafting and implementing road projects in the 2014-2020 period to be financed by Operational Programmes Transport and Regional Development. According to preliminary plans, the new structure was to begin work on June 17 but the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works explained that the specific structure had to be prepared.

The management team and the experts of the new company will be selected in a competition. The Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works announced that it will make an effort to attract an international team of experts to the new structure.

After the establishment of Strategic Infrastructure Projects, the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) will remain the sole beneficiary of funds under the OP Transport priority axis Development of Road Infrastructure along Trans-European and Major National Transport Axes. RIA will continue to implement the projects financed under OP Regional Development, Transit Roads IV, Transit Roads V and Rehabilitation of Road Infrastructure.
