Cross border checkpoint Makaza to be opened in September

''In September, the Makaza cross-border checkpoint will be opened to Greece, as well as a part of the Pan European Transport Corridor № 9," said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov at the inauguration of the rehabilitated highway section Momchilgrad-Krumovgrad, announced BTA (Bulgarian Telegraph Agency). According to him, this topic will be discussed today with Greek PM George Papandreou in Brussels, where an EU summit is to be held. The project implementation on the Greek side is at a very advanced stage and Bulgarian construction works are also near completion. "When I assumed office two years ago, you were scared in this region that I will put into effect great ethnic reforms, while now GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) government implements construction projects for new roads and infrastructure," retorted Boyko Borissov. He added that the opening of the Trans-European transport corridors would increase the tourists flow and attract new investments to the region.

The repaired 18.2 - km long highway section Krumovgrad - Momchilgrad cost BGN 9.276 mln and the funds for its rehabilitation were granted under Operational Programme Regional Development. Over 3,000 m of elastic railings have been installed along the section. Besides, safety traffic islands have been designated at both road junctions to the village of Nanovitsa and to the mine Zvezdel. The operation of the highway section has been authorised by signing the Act 16 (certificate in compliance with Bulgarian construction legislation) which guarantees the quality and legal use of the road. "Over 160,000 people drive along this road," said Rosen Plevneliev, Minister of Regional Development and Public Works. The tender procedure for the selection of a contractor for the construction of the highway section of Kardzhali-Podkova to the cross-border checkpoint Makaza is also at its final stage. The construction of this section is to be launched in August. "The preparation stage of the construction works on the round about of Kardzhali has also commenced," announced Plevneliev. In fact, it should be ready by the end of the year and it must become operative in 2012.
