The Green Party attacks investment projects selectively

Andrey Kovachev, who was co-chair of the Green Party until recently and is a member of its National Council, now is within the Supreme Expert Environmental Council. Kovachev is also a member of Balkans - Wildlife Associations and Let Nature Remain in Bulgaria Coalition.

“I insist that the contract with the concessionaire of the ski facilities in Bansko - the company Ulen – be immediately terminated and the facilities destroyed,” he said on BNR (Bulgarian National Radio) yesterday. A few days ago, Minister of Environment and Water Nona Karadjova admitted of violations in the contract.

Businessman Philip Tsanov from the Nature for the People and Regions Coalition, on his part, made a guess that the environmentalists did not want a change in the concession contract in Bansko, as this might lead to changes in contracts for concessions in other parts of the country as well: “As far as I know, the concession of Kaolin JSC might be changed as well, and Kaolin is the company most directly connected with Mr. Kovachev. There residents of Merichleri whose water was poised protested, demanding a change in the concession contracts and revoking Kaolin’s contract. Everything is concealed there,” said Tsanov.

Tsanov reminded that Ivo Prokopiev’s company Kaolin was extracting kaolin from the Velikan quarry in Merichleri, in the region of Dimitrovgrad, polluting private plots of land there. At the same time, the explosives at the deposit pose a risk to the mineral spring in Merichleri. Although Kovachev is fighting for a cleaner environment, he is not protesting against Kaolin.

It’s a fact that the same environmentalist - Andrey Kovachev – did not appear in front of the Council of Ministers’ building to protest against other similar cases, violating the laws in quite a similar way.
