Georgi Parvanov to bTV: A British intelligence agent helped for the release of Bulgarian medics from Libya

A British intelligence agent whose name cannot yet be revealed played an important role in the release of the Bulgarian medics sentenced to death in Libya, it became known from the interview of President Georgi Parvanov on bTV this morning. According to the Head of State, the Bulgarian intelligence also played a very important role and Parvanov himself had several meetings with the British intelligence officer.

“I will not be in the list of candidates for Parliament and I won’t be an MP,” stated Parvanov. He was adamant that neither he, nor the incumbent BSP Chairman Sergei Stanishev would decide on the new party leader. The Socialist Party would nominate its future chairman, he believes. Parvanov openly said that BSP’s presidential pre-election campaign had been very late.

President Parvanov spoke in detail about his foreign policy activities. The most difficult moments were his meetings with Muammar Gaddafi and Pope John Paul II when he had half an hour to convince his interlocutors on the validity of his stance. “During my mandate as President we restored our relations with Russia, which are mutually beneficial and based on an equal footing,” he said, adding that Russia’s debt to Bulgaria was then returned to the last penny.
