Programme: Johannes Brahms, Carl Reinecke, F. Mendelssohn and R. Schumann

Carl Reinecke’s career as conductor, accompanist, teacher and composer gave him an esteemed reputation. Today Reinecke’s compositions have been overshadowed by his distinguished name as a teacher. Pupils came to Reinecke from many countries most notably: Edvard Grieg, Christian Sinding, Sir Arthur Sullivan, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, Leos Janáček, Frederick Delius, Max Bruch, Edvard Grieg, Johan Svendsen, Isaac Albéniz and Felix Weingartner. A prolific composer Reinecke wrote over three hundred works in most genres. In addition to a large body of piano works and chamber music he wrote three symphonies, four piano concertos as well as grand and comic operas. Reinecke was exceptionally well connected and was associated with the eminent composers: Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, Felix Mendelssohn, Robert and Clara Schumann, Niels Gade, Ferdinand Hiller and Johannes Brahms.

One of Reinecke’s most notable conducting accomplishments was in 1869 when as musical director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus he was entrusted with the first complete performance of Brahms’ German Requiem. Reinecke’s own music fell out of fashion, although, a small number of his works have endured in the repertoire; namely the Flute Sonata in E major, Op.167 ‘Undine’ and his Flute Concerto, Op.283. In recent years several of his works have been recorded in the ever expanding catalogues: notably on the labels CPO, Signum, Etcetera, Apex, Naxos, Claves and Chandos.

Boyan Ivanov (clarinet) completed his Bachelor studies with the highest honours from Plovdiv Academy of Music in 2005. Three years later, he came to study in London at Trinity College of Music, where he gained the FTCL Recital Diploma. After two successful years, Boyan was awarded the Making Music Philip & Dorothy Green Award for Young Concert Artist. In 2010 he was awarded his Master’s Degree from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he was Principal Clarinet of the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra. Currently, Boyan is an active solo and chamber music performer, holding recitals for several music societies across the UK, Italy and his native country, Bulgaria.

Gabriela Georgieva (piano) is currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in the piano class of Joan Havill with the support of the Guildhall School Trust. During her studies she participated in several solo and chamber music concerts, including charity concerts at Oxford and Haileybury College, as well as a premiere of Nocturne for 21 Pianos in London in 2010. She has participated in master classes with Charles Owen, Paul Roberts and Helen Reid, among others.
