Despite the crisis, holiday travels do not decline in number
Almost one third of the adult Bulgarians stated that they had gone on a holiday in Bulgaria during the last 12 months, according to the data from the latest sociological poll of BBSS Gallup International, commissioned by Klassa daily.Despite the economic crisis and the imposed austere financial measures, Bulgarians still seem to manage to save funds for holiday trips, picnics or other kinds of travels for pleasure and relaxation. In fact, the data from recent years shows no reduction and even a slight increase in the share of Bulgarians who were able to go on holiday last year.
Some 29% of adult Bulgarians reported that last year they had spent their holiday at the Bulgarian seaside or mountain resorts. Actually, their percentage is the same as in 2011, but higher than the one registered in 2010 and 2009.
The rate of domestic holidaymakers is considerably higher among Bulgarians of 18 - 40 years of age, while more than half of the Sofia citizens in this age group went to the Bulgarian seaside or the mountain resorts.
Admittedly, holidays and travels abroad cost generally more funds than any trip or holiday in Bulgaria. About 4% of the Bulgarian population reckoned that they had gone on a trip abroad. In fact, the most frequent travellers abroad are Bulgarians with personal income of over BGN 700, as well as those engaged in private business, free lancers and university graduates.
Although the majority of Bulgarian companies cut their costs for business trips and started to focus on alternative ways of organising meetings by telephone or via online chat sessions with the intent of saving funds for travel, the share of Bulgarians who travel on business trips has no significant decline in recent years. In fact, 4% of the adult Bulgarians travelled for business within the country, while 2% visited another country on a business mission over the last twelve months. In fact, the most frequent business travellers were Bulgarians of 26 - 40 years of age, as well as university graduates.
