Health Minister proposes 20% higher wages for emergency healthcare units

Increasing the wages of the personnel, employed at the emergency healthcare units, by up to 20% was discussed today by the new Minister of Health, Desislava Atanasova, and representatives of professional organisations. "The increase can be realised by transforming part of the Health Ministry's budget earmarked for capital expenditures of hospitals," Atanasova said after the meeting. "For 2012, the Ministry has BGN 20 mln for the purpose and BGN 11 mln out of it can be set aside for wages of personnel at emergency healthcare units," she specified. "The payment of capital expenditures will not be cancelled but these could be postponed," added the Health Minister. However, she declined to specify at the expense of which activities the wage increase would be.

"Talks will be held with Finance Minister Simeon Djankov as well for some 10-15% wage increase at emergency healthcare units, which is about BGN 7-8 mln," added Atanasova. This is the other possibility for increasing the remuneration at these units. Atanasova underlined that she did not intend to transfer the emergency units to the municipal hospitals, as the idea of her predecessor, Dr. Stefan Konstantinov, was. According to her, in addition to the wage increase, doctors at emergency units can be stimulated not to leave their jobs by giving them an opportunity for all kinds of professional specialisations.
