CITUB: Family obligations interfere with work

The family obligations of employed Bulgarians interfere with their work, hampering the performance of their duties, according to about 100% of the participants in a survey on the balance between family life and occupation, conducted by the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB), presented today. The survey was taken among managers, syndicate leaders, workers and employees of 28 enterprises in the country.

Half of the respondents shared the opinion that children under 8 years of age influence the normal performance of their parents' professional duties. Grandparents help in raising the children in the families of more than half of the respondents, 40% of the spouses share the responsibility and 13.4% say their elder children are involved in fulfilling family obligations. About 12% of working parents send their children to kindergartens and 6% resort to paid social services.

The lack of regulated forms of combining professional and family life in our country largely influences the performance of occupational duties, CITUB commented. Some 11.5% of the respondents have to leave the office earlier and 12% are often forced to be absent from work. Some 34.3% of the polled people prefer flexible working hours and only 10% admit that they cannot combine employment and family life. Some 62.7% of the respondents have used a temporary disability leave in order to care for a sick family member, a paid or unpaid leave for family reasons.
