Price of honey to increase

The retail price of honey will increase by about BGN 1/kg, forecast engineer Mihail Mihaylov, Chairman of the Bulgarian Beekeepers Union, on Darik Radio. The reason for this is both the decreased number of bee colonies in the country and higher costs for feeding the bees. According to Mihaylov, the reason is the unusually severe winter and the adverse weather conditions as a result of which some 200,000 bee colonies, or more than a third of all, have perished. The number of bee colonies decreased from some 613,000 to around 400,000 which survived in the spring.

In March, beekeepers requested additional financial assistance from the State to provide, including free veterinary medicines to the beekeepers who had suffered losses and preferential prices for the purchase of sugar for feeding the bee colonies.

Beekeepers have recovered the losses as much as possible. They have taken advantage of the de minimis funding programme under which BGN 3,000,200 have been distributed, or an average of BGN 12 to a bee colony.
