Environmentalists warn about waste discharge pollution of the Topolnitsa river

Environmentalists warned about waste discharge pollution of the waters of the Topolnitsa river – concentrated green and brown colouring, blue liquids and dirty foam – the Bulgarian Coalition for Sustainable Development told klassa.bg. According to the coalition, the inspection of the waters near the operating capacities of the Srednogorie cluster and the presumable production, operations and tailings ponds of Elatsite Med – Mirkovo, Dundee Precious Metals – Chelopech, and Aurubis – Zlatitsa and Pirdop has shown that the offender is Elatsite Med because acid waste waters containing heavy metals seep out through its tailings pond into groundwater or the tailings are blown away by the wind towards the fields, houses and the river. Similar violations have already been found out before. The other pollutant is the gold-mining company Dundee Precious Metals, whose mine is located in Chelopech, while its Chavdar tailings pond is the reason for the acid waste waters, precipitates and infiltration containing arsenic and heavy metals which seep out into groundwater unchecked because of the three-fold increase in production without an assessment of its effect on the people and the environment and without any water-purifying facilities.
