Sofia needs a low-cost airport

“Sofia needs a low-cost airport. Sofia Airport is a classic airport, which cannot ‘play’ much with the fees, while a low-cost airport could do that,” Zahari Alexiev, Executive Director of Heli Air and former head of Directorate General of Civil Aviation Administration, stated in an interview for economymagazine.bg.

He gave as an example the Franktfurt-Hahn Airport, which does not offer the comfort Frankfurt Airport does but services a large influx of low-cost passengers, as well as Brussels’ Charleroi Airport, etc.

“After the entry into force of the third package of deregulation, airlines can freely operate between two different countries without any coordination, flying over the territory of their own country to another European country. This means that a Bulgarian airline can fly from Bucharest, landing in Sofia and Athens, and take passengers from anywhere. Also, an airline registered in its respective EU country can operate in other European countries and vice versa,” explained Alexiev.

“The option of constructing a low-cost airport here should be considered since law-cost air carriers account for 35% of the aviation market in Europe and for 28% of it in Bulgaria. Sofia Airport, which is almost in the city centre, has various noise-related and other restrictions, such as for harmful emissions from aircraft,” said Alexiev. According to him, a plot of land at least some 30-40 km away from Sofia should be sought for the purpose.
