Podkrepa Labour Confederation: A decline in the number of Bulgarians willing to work abroad
The number of Bulgarians who firmly state that they would not work abroad is falling. This was revealed on Thursday after Podkrepa Labour Confederation presented its Support for Dignity of Labour project, which was based on an analysis of the attitude of over 1,200 workers and employees towards working in EU states. Trade unionists conducted two surveys – in 2011 and 2012 – and whereas 32.8% of the respondents stated that they would not work abroad in 2011, the percentage in 2012 was 36.69%.Bulgarians willing to work abroad quote the low salaries in Bulgaria as the main reason for this. Almost half of the respondents also quote the insecurity of their jobs. The number of people quoting the lack of work as a reason to emigrate has increased by 5%. Their percentage was 30% in 2011, compared to 35% of all respondents in 2012.
Great Britain, Germany and Spain are among the most preferred destinations for emigration in the EU. Some 60% of Bulgarians are ready to work abroad no matter for how long. Official requirements, restrictions and bans in some EU countries are still a factor that hampers labour migration. On the other hand, a lot of Bulgarians are worried that they could be deceived by Bulgarian companies offering jobs abroad. Therefore, they prefer not to take risks.
Podkrepa Labour Confederation also surveyed employers' attitudes towards hiring workers from the EU. The survey shows that there are only isolated cases of hiring foreigners and in some of the biggest companies the employees hired are EU experts on temporary business trips.
“The main reasons for emigration are economic, but many people leave the country because they feel there is a lack of prospects in Bulgaria. Bulgarians who have received education of the highest quality prefer seeking professional realisation abroad,” commented Dr. Konstantin Trenchev, President of Podkrepa Labour Confederation.
