A decline in the percentage of people identifying themselves as religious on a global scale

A little over half of the citizens all over the world currently identify themselves as religious, irrespective of their religion or teaching, a global sociological survey conducted by Gallup International showed. The previous survey, carried out between October and December 2011, was conducted among more than 52,000 men and women from over 58 countries from all parts of the world.

At present, the country where the highest percentage of the population consider themselves religious is Ghana. As many as 96% define themselves as religious. The percentage of atheists in this country is 0%, while 2% define themselves as non-religious but in no way atheist.

The top five of the most religious countries also include Nigeria, Armenia, Fiji and Macedonia where 90% of the population or more follow religious practices and are believers.

The region-wise breakup of data shows that the most religious region is Africa with 89% of respondents defining themselves as religious. The countries with the highest percentage of atheists are China and Japan.
