Exploration for natural gas begins in Southern Bulgaria

“Exploration for deposits of conventional gas and oil will begin in Southern Bulgaria for the first time,” Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Delian Dobrev said on bTV.

The first section to be explored is 1-18 Trakia, covering the municipalities of Svilengrad, Madzharovo, Harmanli and Lyubimets. “The area is part of the so-called oil and gas basin on the territory of three countries - Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey,” added Delian Dobrev. Turkey alone has discovered 24 gas and three oil deposits in the region.

The exploration will last for almost two years and will cost the concessionaire more than €7 mln. Deposits are expected to be discovered around 1,500 m deep in the ground. The exploration will be done by specialised trucks using a vibration method to determine the kind of rocks beneath without the need for drilling.

If the explorations are successful, extraction in the region may begin in four years at the earliest.

Currently, the average annual consumption of gas in Bulgaria stands at around 3 billion cu m, of which only 10% are from own resources.
