Government projects a minimum monthly wage of BGN 310 as of January 2013

“The Government projects to raise the minimum monthly wage to BGN 310 as of January 2013,” Minister of Labour and Social Policy Totyu Mladenov, said on Thursday. Thus, the minimum wage increase since the beginning of the mandate will become BGN 70. In August, the number of jobless people in the country fell by 5,000 and the unemployment rate was 10.7%.

At the end of July, Deputy PM and Finance Minister Simeon Djankov announced the Government’s plans for raising incomes, specifying a projected 7.3% minimal growth of pensions and an increase of the minimum monthly wage by BGN 20.

Syndicates have demanded to convene the National Council for Tripartite Cooperation on the incomes policy. The Confederation of Independent Trade Union in Bulgaria (CITUB) claims that the increase of pensions projected by the Cabinet will not compensate for the inflation accumulated over the last few years and insist for an increase of at least 10%, as well as a one-time differentiated financial aid of between BGN 20 and BGN 50 for retirees with pensions below BGN 400. CITUB also demands a minimum monthly wage of BGN 330 as of the beginning of next year, which the Finance Minister deems unattainable.

The Podkrepa Labour Confederation places even higher demands – for a 15% increase of pensions as of October 1 and for another 10% increase as of the beginning of next year. The syndicate also insists on raising the minimum monthly wage to BGN 330 as of Q4 2012 and to BGN 350 as of January 1, 2013.

The budget forecasts until 2015 stipulate an annual increase of at least BGN 20 of the minimum monthly wage, so that it will reach BGN 350 in three years. As of September 1, 2011, the minimum wage was raised to BGN 270 and, as of May 1, 2012, to BGN 290 .
