Boris Velchev resigns, his self-assessment is critical

The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) dismissed Boris Velchev from the post Chief Prosecutor ahead of schedule, after he filed his resignation due to his election as constitutional judge.

"Being a Chief Prosecutor for seven years is a hard and ungrateful job. In all these years I tried to perform my duties honestly. Today, I will not render an account, prosecutors submit a report every year. I hope that most of us can confirm that the prosecution is now better organised, more open and more professional than 7 years ago. I'm not trying to take credit for this myself," said Velchev.

His assessment of his own mandate is critical, admitting that he hasn't managed to fulfil a lot of things. Velchev pointed out the lack of effective sentences in lawsuits against organised criminal groups as the main drawback of his term.

SJC awarded Boris Velchev a badge of honour after he was dismissed.

"I have always thought that the gold honorary award means the end of a career, please spare me this," said Boris Velchev in response to the proposal for an award, but SJC voted for the award anyway.
