Bulgarians complain most of the energy market

Bulgaria ranks first in terms of end users’ dissatisfaction with the functioning of the energy market. “The domestic market, both the wholesale and retail market, is not functioning,” Dinko Raychev, an economist at the Power Engineering Chief Directorate of the European Commission, said, quoted by BGNES.

The economist presented the European vision of creating a functioning energy market in the period up to 2014. Raychev described the need for a systemic regulator and the establishment of power exchanges as some of the most important prerequisites for the development of the Bulgarian market in  order for it to reach the European level. Among his criticisms was the indexation of the price of electricity.

“We see the market as a tool for citizens and organisations to achieve goals which are far more important to them - for example, economic growth and job creation,” said Raychev. The expectations of Europe are that such a market will result in a 1% increase of GDP and the employment rate.

According to him, a functioning single market for energy is the best way to ensure the lowest competitive energy prices. Even now, if all households follow closely the market offers and take advantage of these, they can save more than €15 bn.
