Dads want equal rights to their children after a divorce

About 30 dads dressed in Santa Claus costumes organised a peaceful march in Sofia on Father's Day - December 26. The procession was held under the slogan "Children Need Their Fathers on Christmas." The Responsible Fathers Foundation was the event's organiser. The main demand of fathers included legislative changes which will ensure equal rights of the child's father and mother after a divorce or a separation.

Fathers were adamant that, currently, fathers and mothers have equal rights only on paper. Protesters also want a special children's court and a children's Ombudsman, as well as a specific methodology which will determine the mother's and father's parenting capacity after a divorce. Fathers want additional training for police officers, judges and social workers regarding child-parent relationships. Dads said they have had a number of meetings in several institutions in order to submit their requests and they now want a response. There was increased police presence and about 10 police cars escorted protesting fathers. The EU flag was "leading" the protest. Protesters handed out candy to children passing by.
