Over 70% of Bulgarians in Spain do not want to come back to Bulgaria

Some 73.32% of the Bulgarians living and working in Spain do not intend to return to Bulgaria in the next five years, showed a survey on the Bulgarian Diaspora abroad, conducted by the Economic Research Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Only 5% of our 170,000 compatriots living in Spain said they might come back to Bulgaria.

“About 2.71% of the children of Bulgarian emigrants in Spain do not speak their native language and almost one-third of the families speak both Bulgarian and Spanish. Over 60% of the parents would encourage their children to study or work in Bulgaria, or return to our country,” announced Associate Professor Vesselin Minchev, Vice Director of the institute who headed the survey.

Over 66% of the Bulgarians living in Spain spend almost their entire income during their stay abroad. They are basically employed in three sectors - hospitality, construction and transport, and earn around €900 per month on average, showed data from the survey.

Some 54.7% of the Bulgarians are employed by companies owned by Spanish people and 21.8% work for compatriots. About 12.2% work as helphands in Spanish households and 7.9% - in agriculture.

Most of the Bulgarians in the Iberian country have secondary vocational or ordinary secondary education, 14.9% have BA degrees and 8% - MA degrees.

As the main reason for moving to Spain, our compatriots point out their desire for a higher living standard and higher remuneration. Only 12.5% state they have moved in order to support their family or other relatives who have remained in Bulgaria.
