NSI: Industrial production for November rises on a monthly basis, but declines on a year-on-year basis

According to preliminary data of the National Statistical Institute (NSI), in November 2012, the index of industrial production increased by 0.9%, compared to October 2012, the institute announced on Wednesday.

In November 2012, the calendar adjusted index of industrial production registered a 2.1% decline, compared to the corresponding month of 2011. In November 2012, compared to the previous month, a 7.4% increase in production and distribution of electricity, heat and gas was registered, as well as a 0.6% increase in manufacturing. However, the mining and quarrying industry reported a 19.2% decline.

The most significant increases in manufacturing include the sector for manufacturing of basic metals - 11.7%, leather processing and manufacture of leather - 10.8%, printing and reproduction of recorded media - 7.7%, clothing production - 7.0%, and production of chemical products - 5.0%. The sector “Production of transport vehicles, excluding cars” marked a 25.5% decrease, while tobacco products production - 12.7%, beverages production - 5.2%, and pharmaceutical products - 2.9%.

On an annual basis, a decrease in industrial production, calculated from working–day adjusted data, was reported in the mining industry - 11.6%; production and distribution of electricity, heat and gas - 4.8%, and the processing industry - 0.2%. A significant decrease, compared to the previous year, was observed in the manufacturing of the following: tobacco products - 38.9%, vehicles other than cars - 22.3%, metal products other than machinery and equipment - 12.9%, leather and leather processing - 10.9 %, textiles and textile products other than clothing - 8.6%. An increase was registered in the manufacture of rubber and plastic products - 19.8%, in the manufacture of paper and paper products and cardboard - 16.8%, as well as in the manufacture of electrical equipment - 9.9%.

The index of production in the construction sector, calculated on the basis of seasonally adjusted data, was 1.1%, compared to the previous month, NSI announced.

Calendar adjusted data showed a 1.2% increase in construction output in November 2012, compared to the same month of 2011. In November 2012, the index of construction production, calculated from seasonally adjusted data, was below the level of the previous month, since civil/engineering construction production decreased by 1.5%, while building construction marked a 0.9% drop. On an annual basis, the increase in construction output in November 2012 was mainly determined by the positive momentum in civil/engineering construction, which marked a 8.0% growth, calculated from calendar adjusted data, while building construction registered a 3.9% decrease.
