Amendments to the Health Insurance Act approved by MPs at second reading

On Thursday, Parliament adopted at second reading amendments to the Health Insurance Act, stipulating that the management of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) will already be able to fund medical and dental activities, as well as medicines which have not been included in the current National Framework Agreement. Thus, the opinion of the Bulgarian Medical Association (BMA), which did not approve the terms of the new framework agreement, will be circumvented. Among the activities to be financed are: intensive medical care in hospitals, in vitro procedures and provision of vaccines.

“The adopted amendments practically mean that contracts may be signed between renders of medical assistance and the NHIF through the regional health funds for all new activities approved for financing in the 2013 budget. These are included in Regulation 40 as a basic package. This means that intensive medical care for Bulgarian citizens is guaranteed,” Health Minister of Desislava Atanasova commented to journalists.
