Consumer confidence rises by 2.3% points in three months

In January 2013, the overall index of consumer confidence in the population increased by 2.3 percentage points from its level in October 2012. The improvement is due to the more optimistic expectations in the cities, while the level of the indicator remains unchanged for the rural population. The data came from the latest survey by the National Statistical Institute (NSI). Both residents of cities and villages believe that, as a whole, the economic situation in the country is improving.

At the beginning of the new year, people living in the cities are regaining their optimism, while the rural population's projections for the future remain pessimistic. The discrepancy in estimates is due to assumptions about the development of the economic situation during the year: urban residents hope that it will continue to improve up to "+ 4.7 percentage points", while the village population expects a "-0.4 points" deterioration.

The majority of respondents expect that price increases will gradually subside this year and unemployment will be stabilised. According to the results of the poll, Bulgarians live with the feeling that the "bottom" of unemployment has been reached. Therefore, in the coming months, they do not expect an increase, but a certain decrease in the number of people without work. Generally, attitudes in society are that unemployment will stop rising and may even decrease slightly over the next 12 months. And this will be a prerequisite for a slight improvement of the material situation of households.

At the same time, the majority of Bulgarian consumers believe that now it is not the time to save, however, they do not intend to spend more than the current level. Despite the declared optimism, most people will continue to refrain from purchases of durable goods and the vast majority of the population does not plan to buy a car or a new home in the coming months.
