Bulgaria may initiate a lawsuit because of poor-quality imported goods

“Bulgaria may initiate a lawsuit because goods of different quality than these sold on the West European market are offered on the domestic market,” Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov said on bTV. “If we come across such products, we may confiscate them and stop their manufacturing,” said Naydenov. These comments were provoked by a survey of a Slovak NGO which found that some companies sell foodstuffs of good quality in Austria and Germany and of a lower class and with different ingredients in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania. According to the NGO, some companies sell their worst products in Bulgaria.

“I do not want today, when talking of a two-speed Europe, to use a double standard for Europe,” said the minister after his meeting with representatives of large multinational companies which offer food products on the European and the world market. According to Naydenov, Bulgarian consumers expect an answer to the question whether there is a difference in the quality of products offered in our country and those sold in the old EU member-states. “However, this is by no means a question of safety,” Naydenov pointed out.

The Minister said he would refer the matter to the EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy John Dalli. “I will fight for Bulgarians to be treated as EU citizens with equal rights to those from the other member-states. That is why I addressed businesses in order to do what we can together,” said Naydenov.

The companies which the survey concerns and which attended the meeting denied producing products of different quality for the different EU countries. Some representatives even questioned the existence of the Slovak NGO which carried out the survey and called it a manipulation.
