Environmentalists push for the creation of a national strategy on coastal regions

The Civic Ecologic Public Union (CEPU) is pushing for the creation of a national strategy for coherent government and development of Bulgaria's coastal regions. The organisation is composed of Political Club Ekoglasnost, the Green Party, the Federation of Consumers in Bulgaria, the Association of Huntsmen and Fishermen in Bulgaria and other NGOs.

“The national strategy on costal area development is clearly something the Bulgarian public needs in light of the planned amendments to the Black Sea Coast Spatial Planning Act (BSCSPA),” pointed out Ruslana Stefanova, CEPU's co-ordinator. The organisation stands firmly behind the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works in its effort to ban all construction on the coastal strip of land, stretching 100-meters into the mainland. Emil Georgiev from PC Ekoglasnost warned that the second reading of the bill amending BSCSPA provides for the abolition of the ban on construction in zone A. He says prohibiting any construction 100 meters into the mainland will stem excessive development of the area, help environmental protection and attract tourists.

Environmentalists opposed the proposed change that will make project approvals and building permits active from the day of application. The change will make it easier to sidestep rules and regulations, and will trigger a wave of investment projects and construction works near the coastline.

A few days ago, PC Ekoglasnost wrote to Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Minister of Internal Affairs Tsvetan Tsvetanov, urging them to revoke the contract giving the rights for production in the limestone-pit Velikan to Kaolin AD.
