Marine rescue teams searching for a missing sailor

The Executive Agency Maritime Administration (EAMA) jointly with the non-governmental voluntary organisation BULSAR is conducting a search and rescue (SAR) action for the rescue of a missing sailor, announced the Ministry of Transport, Information Technologies and Communications. The seafarer, who is a Turkish citizen, was part of the crew of the Amazing ship sailing under the Maltese flag, announced for Klassa, EAMA Director, Sergei Tsarnakliyski. The vessel was travelling from the Ukraine to the Bosphorus.

The sailor was last seen on May 11 around 20:45 hrs when the ship was sailing in Romanian waters but his absence was discovered this morning at 7:00 hrs when the vessel was already near the Bosphorus.

EAMA undertook SAR actions for searching the area under the responsibility of Bulgaria. As early as noon, SAR aircraft of BULSAR with two observers and a liaison officer on board, took off. Bulgarian Naval Forces reported about a nearby ship that could provide assistance should the SAR aircraft find the missing sailor. All vessels found in the area were warned to navigate with caution. Amazing ship also sailed back on its course to search for the missing seafarer. By the editorial completion of Klassa's issue, he had not been found and the SAR operation continues.

This aircraft for surveillance and investigation is used for the first time after the change of EAMA's administration. The former head of the Agency, Captain Nikolay Apostolov, explicitly refused to use the assistance of volunteer organisations. It was a particularly striking incident when the Tolstoy ship sank on September 26, 2009 and eight people died. At that time, the two surviving sailors were found accidentally by a passing private yacht, while the SAR mission itself was delayed by more than 8 hours.
