Lyutvi Mestan: MRF will play an important role in the battle for the Presidential post

“MRF can not be a reserve political player, and despite that its role in the presidential vote seems to be less important, it may turn out that the party plays a crucial role in this election battle,” said yesterday Lyutvi Mestan, Vice-Chairman of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), when leaving the Central Electoral Commission (CEC). Mestan submitted the necessary documents for the MRF’s registration for the presidential elections.

“A party registration does not necessarily mean that it will participate in the elections with president and vice president candidates both from the party,” said Mestan. According to him, the registration is compulsory for a major party such as MRF and it means that it holds open the option for running with own candidates in the presidential race.

Since spring this year, MRF leader Ahmed Dogan and his deputies have been maintaining that the movement is likely to partake in the presidential elections with its own candidates. However, specific names have not been mentioned yet. Yesterday, Lyutvi Mestan declined to comment on the possible nomination of MRF.

“A new coalition between GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria), Ataka party and BSP (Bulgarian Socialist Party) is emerging in the CEC, ” said yesterday Mestan. According to him, the three parties are trying to eliminate the MRF’s representatives from holding managing positions in the Municipal Election Commissions (MEC). For that reason, the movement will refer the matter to the Department of Elections in OSCE ( Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe), asking for election observers and for continuous monitoring of the decisions, issued by the CEC and the MEC.
