The share of long-term unemployed has increased

Over 60% of the unemployed in the country have been unemployed for more than one year, shows data from the recent nationally representative survey of BBSS Gallup International, commissioned by Klassa daily.

Even though signs of economic recovery from the crisis have been noticed, its impact on the unemployment rate and the labour market in the country is still notable.

Today, about 15% of all adult Bulgarians and 18% of Bulgarians in active employment age (18-65 years) are unemployed. These indicators have been relatively stable since the beginning of the year. The share of unemployed is traditionally significantly higher among Bulgarians with primary or lower education, among Roma people and Bulgarians of Turkish origin. The lowest unemployment rate was registered among modern people (those who speak foreign languages, use the Internet and travel - 3%), among university graduates (6%) and among the residents of the capital (7%).

Although the crisis has not changed the demographic profile of the poeple most endangered by unemployment, the experts from Gallup recorded a change in the nature of unemployment – namely in its duration.

The share of long-term unemployed (unemployed for more than one year) persons has been the highest over the last four years - 61%. The largest proportions of long-term unemployed persons have been registered among women, residents of small and district towns, among Bulgarian citizens with primary or lower education.

Despite the long period without a job, the majority of unemployed Bulgarians have not given up looking for work - 74% say they seek / will seek jobs in the next 1-2 months. Only 13% had accepted the facts and said they did not intend to look for a new job in the near future.
