CITUB demands a wage increase in the real economy

The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) demands a wage increase of some 10-15% in most sectors of the real economy, said the union leader Plamen Dimitrov after signing an agreement for cooperation between Varna and the Federation of Trade Unions in Bulgaria.

According to Dimitrov, CITUB’s demand concerns the mining industry, metallurgy, machine building, food industry and tourism. He added he expected this to happen, commenting that wherever it is possible, the wage increase should be negotiated at the level of enterprises. The syndicate leader gave as an example Navigation Maritime Bulgare (Navibulgar), which had committed to raise wages in the autumn by some 15% on average for the entire company.

In addition, CITUB demands salaries in all budget sectors to be raised by 10% as of January 1, 2012 since these have been frozen for the last three years, plus a minimum wage increase to BGN 290.

CITUB’s leader pointed out that Bulgaria’s consolidated budget was around BGN 28 bn in its expenditure side and the salaries paid from the Republican Budget amounted to some BGN 3.5-4 bn a year. If the wage increase is 10%, that means expenditures of about BGN 350-400 mln for two years, counted from 2012. There is a real opportunity for the budget to take upon itself an additional wage increase of around 10% and an increase of the minimum wage, which would give a breath of fresh air to people with low incomes, Dimitrov commented.
