Biofuels and biomass may prove to be detrimental to the climate

Biofuels and biomass may prove detrimental to the climate in the long run, according to a research commissioned by BirdLife International, European Environment Agency, announced the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds/BirdLife Bulgaria. According to them, there is a serious problem with the reporting of carbon levels, which might lead to undermining the EU's objectives on the promotion of the large-scale use of biofuels.

According to the survey, the amount of biomass which Europe will use over the next decade will have an average of 81-167% less harmful impact on climate change, compared to that of conventional fossil fuels. In order to achieve the objectives stipulated in EU directives, the intended use of 69,000 sq km of lands across the world could be changed. By 2020, a territory with an area twice larger than that of Belgium must be planted with crops for biofuel production. This would threaten many forests and other natural ecosystems, claimed the organisation. Yesterday, the Bulgarian Minister of Environment and Water, Nona Karadjova participated in a meeting of the Environmental Council of Ministers in Luxembourg, which discussed the preparation of international conferences on waste in Cartagena (Colombia) and on climate change in Durban (South Africa).
