Some 16,000 children drop out of school every year

“About 16,000 children drop out of school every year. Therefore, one of the main priorities in secondary education in 2012 should be to reduce the number of students who quit school,” Yanka Takeva, Chairperson of the Bulgarian Teachers’ Union (BTU), said today for BTA. According to Takeva, in addition to the national policies for free transportation, textbooks and snacks at school and for extracurricular activities, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science should require from the regional education inspectorates and authorities to develop local educational policies. “These must be aimed at stopping the process of children dropping out of school. This means thousands of classes and thousands of jobs,” said the syndicate leader.

According to BTU, there has been no decreasing trend in the number of school dropouts in recent years and this is quite alarming. For this reason, Yanka Takeva believes the sustainability of the school network must be a top priority. Another priority according to her is the improvement of the quality of the educational process, part of which is the change in the curriculum. “We must make students come to love the school and to go to school willingly, and the curriculum should suit their age. Conditions must be created to encourage every child at school,” added Yanka Takeva. Among BTU’s priorities are also the upgrading of teachers’ qualification and the drafting of a new law on pre-school and school education.
