Romania not to slash Danube Bridge toll fee

Romania will not slash the toll fee collected from vehicles crossing the Danube Bridge between Giurgiu and Ruse, despite the decision of the Bulgarian Government to unilaterally reduce the toll fee, reported Romania’s agency Mediafax.

The motive of the Romanian authorities is that they need that money. Romania’s decision was stated in an official governmental document at the end of last year.

At that time, Bulgaria’s Finance Minister Simeon Djankov announced, after a visit to Romania, that he had received assurances from the authorities in Bucharest that they were preparing to cut the toll fee, too, posted Mediafax.

In the summer of 2011, the Bulgarian Government reduced the toll fee for cars crossing the bridge from Ruse to Giurgiu from €6 to €2. As a result of this measure, the annual proceeds from toll fees dropped by some BGN 2 mln.

“The bridge is the only facility over the Danube river between Bulgaria and Romania, and it is being crossed by about 900 vehicles daily,” agency officials noted. The Romanian authorities, however, continue to demand some €6 for crossing the facility in the opposite direction, which amounts to over €5 mln per day.

The document stated that Romania does not intend to change the tall fee soon since the Company for Motorways and National Roads of Romania needs these revenues, which are being used to finance construction works, the modernisation and reconstruction of national roads.
