Bulgarian Judges Association demands incrimination either of Tsvetan Tsvetanov or Miroslava Todorova

“The Prosecutor General should request the information which gave Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov reason to accuse President of the Bulgarian Judges Association Miroslava Todorova of acting "in favour of the organised crime," urged in an open letter to the media former Heads of BJA Kapka Kostova, Nelly Koutskova and Stoil Sotirov.

The scandal between Tsvetanov and Todorova blew up after an interview of the Minister of Interior where he stated that Miroslava Todorova, judge at Sofia City Court, worked in favour of the organised crime and gave as an example the trial against Vassil Manikatov. He explained his accusations with the penalty imposed on Todorova for more than 50 delayed cases, including the one of Manikatov. The Ministry of Interior considers Vassil Manikatov "drug lord No. 1" in South-Western Bulgaria. At the end of last year, he was released from prison, where he served a 10-year sentence for drugs trade.

His sentence was reduced by almost 3 years because of good behaviour and work on construction sites. A reduction of the punishment of working prisoners is a general principle.

"We believe that the Prosecution itself should establish whether judge Todorova acted "in favour of the organised crime" and should bring charges against her if the answer is positive. But in the opposite case, the state Prosecution must decide whether the Minister of Interior issued statements on behalf of his administration without evidence, thus misusing his powers in order to cause damage to another," stated the position of the three magistrates.
